A Year of Accomplishments; A Future of Opportunities.
Transformation in health tech is still in its early years with the adoption and definition of open standards, interoperability and how they simplify complex healthcare workflows. While the health tech community has made tremendous strides in this, we still have a long way to go to expand the footprint of interoperability, and build use-cases that automate, unify and unlock new ways of delivering care.
In this video Duncan Weatherston, Smile’s Co-Founder and CEO, reflects on the year (and decade), shares his vision for the next era of healthcare, and shares how Smile is building new pathways towards meaningful care. Watch, like and comment here.
The Health Tech Shift from Episodic to Continuous
Historically, bringing fragmented data together in a truly useful and scalable way has been a challenge in healthcare. Now, with a renewed focus on information and technologies like FHIR®, CQL (Clinical Quality Language), and AI, we can simplify complexities and uncover real value.
At Smile, we combine AI, FHIR, CQL and semantic interoperability to create tools that enrich data. Our systems enable conversational interfaces with data, predictive analytics for providers, support for payers’ workflows, and give patients insight into their own records in ways they couldn’t before. We’ve been working towards this synergy of intelligence, information, and access for years, and it is foundational. We are now finally seeing adoption and meaningful forward motion.
There are risks, of course. But with a shared focus on quality and safety guiding the healthcare community, the coming years offer a chance to be transformative. We will see similar shifts in healthcare as we do in other industries, which is a motion towards information as a core constituent of care delivery, and the opportunities are enormous.
Historically, healthcare has been episodic. You wait until you feel bad, then seek care to feel better. The future, and what we’re working on at Smile, is care as an ongoing reflection of your overall wellbeing; and participate with payers and providers to use that information to deliver better, appropriate care.
